As its Earth Day today I think one important question we must ask ourselves is, “Are we being good ancestors?” This book really challenged my thinking and helped me appreciate the long view, although dark in places, the leading public philosopher Roman Krznaric argues that there is still hope 🙏🏻

He talks about being a “time rebel” referring to those activists who are seeking “intergenerational justice” as well as cities rather than states taking responsibility for communities and long term planning. Krznaric makes a convincing case that in our digital age of “pathological short-termism” we are giving less and less consideration to our descendants.

I loved that he said, he gives his voting rights to his 7yr old twins as they should be able to vote for their future, rather than older generations making decisions that will not affect them longer term, like Brexit.

Rather than GDP, he challenged Presidents and Leaders to think about Gross Domestic Happiness and making sure we do not commit ‘ecoside’ environmental genocide and adopt acorn brains not marshmallow brains 🧠

Krznaric celebrates the innovators who are reinventing democracy, culture and economics so that we all have the chance to become good ancestors and create a better tomorrow.

Being a good ancestor should be one of our highest callings in life — focusing us on doing today what will help the future 🌳🌎💚
